Pet Amphibians
Introduction
Amphibians are active and fun to watch move around their enclosures. Many of them have striking color palettes and are a joy to care for. Amphibians can make for great pets for anyone looking for an interesting animal to watch.
Care
Amphibians have skin that is very sensitive and they need a specific temperature, humidity, water quality, and enclosure design to stay healthy. Most species need a temperature around 60-70 degrees fahrenheit with tropical species needing 75-80 degrees. Humidity should be at least 75-80% for most species and 85-90% for tropical. Failure to do this can kill your pet. High humidity can be achieved using water dishes, water features, and mistings using spray bottles. Some enclosures will need to have swimming areas and the substrate may need to have layers for drainage and dirt.
Personality
Amphibians are alert and observe their surroundings. They are sensitive to their environment and conditions. Some species embrace handling better than others but you should always wear gloves when you do because toxins from your hands can seep into their skin. In general handling should be kept to a minimum or not done at all because of this.
Cost
Amphibians cost are reasonable overall. Most frogs are cheap to buy costing only around $10-$50. Initial setup will involve buying a terrarium for around $100 dollars and accessories. You will also need substrate, a water dish, wood, lighting, and a spray bottle or automatic misting system. Food costs can be anywhere from $2-$20 a month depending on the species and how many you have. In total you can expect to spend a couple hundred dollars a year.
