Pet Reptiles
Introduction
Reptiles are some of the most interesting animals out there. There is so much variety amongst reptiles that make them incredibly intriguing to watch. They can offer satisfaction and joy in a way that few other pets can provide.
Care
Reptile care largely comes down to getting the parameters surrounding their enclosure right. Most species need an enclosure with a hot side, cool side, and a basking spot. This can be achieved using heat lamps positioned on one side of the enclosure. Some species require UVB lamps for their health so it’s important to do your research to know what kind you need. Feeding varies but their diet typically consists of insects, leafy greens, mice, or some combination of them. They eat anywhere from multiple times a day to only a few times a week depending on species and stage of life. Owners must check their enclosures for feces regularly to clean it and replace the substrate every six months to a year. There is also a bioactive option for more advanced keepers that automatically keeps the substrate clean using bugs that decompose the feces for you.
Personality
Most reptiles are not very social. While there are certain species that are more comfortable around people than others in general reptiles are meant to look at rather than interact with. Reptiles often hide using leaves, rocks, and burrowing in the dirt. This is an important consideration when creating an enclosure for them.
Cost
Reptiles upfront costs are expensive but the annual cost isn’t too bad. The majority of it is for food and electricity to run heating elements. Food costs vary significantly depending on the species and their stage of life but it costs little to no money if you are willing to breed and grow your own insects or greens. Bulbs and substrate will have to be replaced over time as bulbs die out and the substrate gets old. All in all while the yearly costs for a reptile depends on a variety of factors it will likely only cost a few hundred dollars a year at most.
